Music Stars Top Annual Search Ranking at Yahoo
Musicians topped the rankings once again on Yahoo, which recently released its annual "Buzz Index" of top searches. Britney Spears was the most searched overall, the third time the artist has ranked number one over the past four years. 50 Cent, Green Day, Jessica Simpson, Eminem, Ciara, and Lindsay Lohan also grabbed top ten stripes, reflecting an incredibly strong demand for musical-related celebrities. Spears did not release an album this year, but dominated tabloid headlines with news of her pregnancy. 50 Cent enjoyed an incredibly strong string of hits, and starred in an autobiographical motion picture.
Yahoo is one of the most heavily-trafficked destinations on the web, and its users have shown a clear demand for top musical artists. The showing easily outshines celebrities from other realms, including those from the film, sports, or modeling arenas. Meanwhile, Google has pointed to a similar trend, and recently launched a music-focused results set to better satisfy the requests. Elsewhere, meta-search engine Dogpile.com noted that "music lyrics" topped its annual search query rankings, a development that coincides with news of a stepped-up enforcement effort from music publishers against unauthorized lyrics sites.
